![]() ![]() I have to start off like most others who reviewed this place, MS sucks for beer, so don't expect too much off the wall beers. I've already joined! I will be back to West Point when my beer urges hit.which is often! Thank you, Smokestack! Aug 12, 2009 He also put me onto, the site for the group trying to repeal Beer Prohibition in MS. The guy behind the counter was very knowledgeable it seemed and made some great suggestions. I can't believe I've been missing the chance to purchase these beers for so long! They have quite a selection of Rogue bombers (of which I purchased several) and several other "legal" brews that I don't see much in other stores in this area. Living in Columbus I hadn't even heard of the place till I joined and searched places in Mississippi. And one of the best places we have is the Smokestack in West Point. Having said that, us beer lovers in Mississippi do the best we can with what we have. Since Alabama recently Freed the Hops that leaves Mississippi as the only state in the nation that doesn't allow high gravity beer. Living and working in Mississippi is not a garden spot for a true beer lover. Visited The Smokestack for the first time today, finally. Please note that I write this review in comparison to other beer stores I have visited across the nation. ![]() Come on out and see what the guys who used to make runs out of state to get real beer have to offer! They currently have four taps for filling growlers (soon to be six), a growing selection of Belgian Ales, everything from our lone local brewery (Lazy Magnolia) and, as far as I can tell, every Rogue that is being brewed.Īll in all, the best selection of beer I've seen in Mississippi and well worth the drive from Columbus or Starkville. I've made the trip over from Columbus twice now in two weeks, and I know I'll be back on a weekly basis for the foreseeable future.īoth times I've been in there I've been immediately asked what kind of beer I'm in the mood for and suggestions have been made, both by Phil, the owner and by various staff members. There are none in Columbus, a couple in Starkville that are trying to stock some better beer, and then there's the Smoke Stack, in West Point. Since Mississippi finally repealed its arcane beer laws, I started looking around for a good beer store. Hopefully Mississippi will overturn their ABV cap in the next year or two so Phil can keep expanding the selection. If you live within an hour, it's well worth the drive for the selection and conversation. You can come in and talk about the selection, what you'd like to see, what you can't get because of distribution and blue laws, what Phil's trying to bring into the state, beer styles, breweries, and just about anything else under the sun. In most beer stores, even good ones that I've been to in other states, the beer is just a product being sold. The best part about the store isn't even the beer itself. It doesn't sound like much, but it's a rare thing to see in this part of the state. Phil keeps singles out, and you can make your own six pack. The entire last third of the cooler is just packed with selections like Rogue Chocolate Stout, Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, atec, North Coast's Scrimshaw and Blue Star, and every new beer that finally works it's way into the state. And as you walk farther into the store you notice the selection in the beer cooler progress from Bud Light and PBR to the Sam Adams collection and every Rogue that you can find in the state, in six packs and bombers. But then you notice the massive walk-in humidor in the back of the shop. Coming in the front door, it looks like a standard beer and cigarette stop, the kind of place I normally wouldn't ever think about just hanging around. Phil has done a great job with The Smokestack. Go north, west, or east, in any direction and you'll quickly encounter a superior selection. First thing's first: As a result of a sad twist of lingering prohibition era legislation and mournable distribution, Mississippi has the worst beer selection in the country. ![]()
